Replacement Window FAQs

What’s the best way to get dimensions for replacement windows?

The accuracy of measurements when upgrading a window is crucial, and even the slightest miscalculations can affect the fit of your new window. That’s why we strongly advise enlisting a professional to measure your window. If, however, you wish to do the measurements yourself, you’ll need to note:

  • Horizontal width: Make three measurements: at the top, the middle, and the bottom. Use the smallest measurement from these three.
  • Vertical height: Here too, you’ll need three measurements: on the left, in the middle, and on the right, and take the smallest measurement as your final one.
  • Depth: Ensure you measure this from all sides of your window.

How much will it cost to replace windows?

Window replacement costs can vary based on a variety of factors, such as window size, style, and more. At Window World, we have options available for all budgets. To find out how much your project will cost, contact us today for a free estimate, and check out our latest promotions.

How should you take measurements for window blinds?

The method for determining the dimensions of your window for blinds can vary based on whether you are installing inside mount blinds or outside mount blinds. Keep in mind the kind of blinds you want to install while following the guidelines below:

Inside mount blinds:

  • Determine the depth of your window frame.
  • Gauge the width of your window at the top, middle, and bottom. The smallest number among these should be your final measurement.
  • Measure the window’s height at three points: left, right, and middle. The smallest or largest of these measurements will be used, based on the kind of blinds or shade you’re putting up.
  • Do not subtract anything from your height or width measurements, as manufacturers already factor in allowances and deductions.

Outside mount blinds:

  • Determine the width that you want your blinds to span, ensuring to include at least 1 ½” on either side for maximum coverage.
  • Measure the height from the point where your blinds will be mounted down to the window sill. Make sure to add an overlap of 1 ½” – 2” at the top to accommodate the mounting hardware of your blinds.
  • Once again, avoid subtracting anything from your dimensions, as manufacturers will take this into account.

How do you clean windows?

The difference between a spotless window and a dirty one is clear as day and night. To keep your windows crystal clear, adhere to these easy guidelines:

  • Start with a vacuum to eliminate larger particles of dust and debris.
  • Use a soft cloth dampened with soapy water to clean your window sash and frame.
  • Use a paper towel (or a lint-free wipe) along with a glass cleaning agent, which can be either commercially available or homemade, to polish the glass panels.
  • Detach your window screens and clean them using a basic blend of soap and water. Make sure to let your screens dry naturally after cleaning.

How do you replace a window screen?

Window screens play a crucial role in the functionality and visual appeal of your windows. If your window screen has significant damages, rips or holes, it’s essential to replace it promptly. Follow the process below for a successful replacement:

  • First, detach the window screen from its setting.
  • Next, with the screen laid down, remove the existing window screen mesh from the slots that secure it.
  • Spread out the new screen mesh over your window screen structure, ensuring to leave some room along the edges, and cut it to size with your preferred tool.
  • Use a spline roller to set your new screen mesh into the slots of your screen frame.
  • Once the new mesh is firmly in place, shear away the excess material around the sides.
  • Finally, place the finished window screen back in its position.

What is a window sash?

A window sash refers to the part of the window that secures the glass panes and their accompanying parts in place. It’s nestled within the window frame and its operation is dependent on the design of the window. For instance, in double hung windows, the window sash has the ability to slide up and down, providing ventilation by letting fresh air circulate in and out of your home.
